3rdWorld themes, going while they are hot

The first two weeks of 3rdWorld themes, my new project aiming to port hundreds of Wordpress and Joomla themes to Drupal, has been a resounding success. Traffic to the site has been more than I ever could have hoped for and I’ve had some really great feedback, not only from happy end users, but also from the original authors of the themes.

We’ve had just a smidgen over 10,000 page views and around 250 downloads. While these numbers are not big, consider we only have 8 themes and the site has only been online for 15 days and we have almost no search traffic as yet (just a mere 3%). The numbers should really start grow once we start getting back-links and search traffic, and of course I have a lot more themes to add to the site over the coming months.

One big upshot is that in the process of gaining permission to port themes I have come into close contact with a number of WP and Joomla designers, and they have all shown a strong interest in getting involved in Drupal, which is great, and half the reason why I started doing this in the first place.

So all round things are rolling along just fine and I’m looking forward to sustained growth and many more great themes for Drupal.

One last thing, if you want your favourite WP or Joomla theme ported to Drupal for free, please login or register and add the theme, you need to be a member or login with OpenID.

#1 Great project! Open site registration?

This is a great project! Letting you know, though, that registration for this site (recommended in this blog post) is currently turned off.

#2 hmmm, does the user/register

hmmm, does the user/register page get cached even if I change the setting? I cleared the cache and can access http://3rdworldthemes.org/user/register so it should be good to go, one thing I did note is thats its impossible to login using my OpenID (Yahoo) which is a long standing and as yet unresolved issue for Drupals OpenID module…

#3 Still Haven't Done a Theme

Sorry I still haven’t completed a theme. I ended up not having time two weekends ago… I still plan on doing a couple, especially now that you’ve enabled Zen as a base theme (which I’m much more comfortable with).

#4 Jeff! Seen you been working

Jeff! Seen you been working hard on node.tpl.php for D7 so kinda figured your were flat out!

#5 So great idea! Can I

So great idea!
Can I join?
Before that I used to make themes almost by scratch, only using my css framework, usually.
But now I want to do that with genesis.
I’d like to port one of themes, particularly http://3rdworldthemes.org/wiki/individual.

#6 Brilliant.

This is really nice stuff, Jeff—designs worthy of Drupal’s prowess as a world-class CMS!

@9, 10, 11, well time has past and I did build a new theme, if you saw it before, well it was pretty minimal and a bit lame.

I think it looks great now, for a non-designer to come up with anyway:)
