Crowd Sourcing Drupal Themes - Lets get this party started!

Today AdaptiveThemes.com relaunched as the first crowd sourced commercial themes provider for Drupal. The concept is simple, designers upload designs and themers port them to Drupal, everyone gets paid a slice of the pie each time the theme sells. That slice is split evenly between the designer and the themer, with a small portion deducted for business and running costs.

The early response has been overwhelming. The feedback from designers has been very positive and they see this as way to extract value form their (often many) unused designs from previous spec work. Themers are being hand picked and there is no way to sign up as a themer to take on work. This was a critical decision because the quality of the coding is all important, whereas less desirable designs simply won’t get ported.

AdaptiveThemes will primarily sell premium quality themes, very high design quality on top of an extensible and end user friendly base theme. The base theme has many theme settings and other end user goodies. Many themes will come with Views export modules and help to set up the site.

The shop launches on August 1st. Right now we are seeking designers (we already have 7 signed up) and building the Ubercart driven shop and other site features to supply real time sales stats back to participants.

The site is live right now, so if you want to check it out, take a look - AdaptiveThemes.com. If you are interested in taking part please sign up or contact me via the contact form. We can only do this with the power of the Crowd so lets party! BTW, silly hat photo’s are mandatory.

#1 Very excited about this…

Very excited about this… already signed up… I’m a designer, themer, and programmer. I see where I can submit designs (which I just might do) — but where or how do I volunteer to port a design?

#2 Josh, I will email you

Josh, I will email you directly to discuss.

#3 OMG

Wow, what a great idea, and from none other than the same brilliant mind that cracked open 3rdWorldThemes - I will certainly be watching this one closely. Thanks Jeff, I have to say you have balls man.

#4 i hope this doesn’t distract

i hope this doesn’t distract you from 3rdworldthemes.org :D

#5 @ddorian - yeah, I’ve been

@ddorian - yeah, I’ve been quiet over there for the last week or so, mainly having a well earned break at the beach and working on some client stuff, oh, and launching this…

Frankly, no, I hardly ever sleep and totally enjoy the complete freedom of the 3rdWorld project, which is in for a huge shake up in the coming weeks, stay tuned:)

@Greg, last time I looked they were intact :)

#6 Number of sales per theme?

I’m just wondering if there will be an upper limit on the theme sales per theme? I’m really liking the site and scope it gives and would be interested in submitting some designs to the cause.
My only thought is that I could put a lot of work into the designs but if they only sell once or twice is it cost/time effective?

#7 Good question

@Dreamleaf - for most themes I see no reason to limit sales. For Super Premium themes there will be a limit (to be decided per theme). A Super Premium theme is one with the highest design quality + other goodies such as Views export module, extended support and configuration + some built in scope for customization.

#8 sounds cool then :D

thanks for that, all sounds great then. This is something that’s been missing from the Druposphere. I’m relatively new to Drupal, but can’t find a contender for it as a comprehensive solution.

What I like about the way you are setting up Adaptive is the collaboration aspect, i’ve done a fair bit with Wordpress in the past and it’s just not a collaborative platform. Sure people share, people contribute, but they don’t (generally) work together for a better end product.

So I guess I’m in, now to go through all my part finished designs for the nicest :D

One last question though for developers… when you use a comp to do the Drupal wizardry, would you prefer a “one-page” psd or multiple page views, such as “front, content item/node, contact etc blah”?

#9 Cool.

From Drupals inception its been a collaborative project so this is an extension of the community, albeit in a rather different way. One thing I very mike like about Drupal is the community, its much more cohesive and collaborative than any other project or collective I have worked with.

I think multiple PSD files are better, as you say one for font, node, login screen etc, its really up to you, but the more you have the less the themer has to “make up” when they are porting the design to Drupal. When you upload your comp (or screenshot) you can either just upload the front page or composite of the various PSD files, just upload a low res version in jpg or png etc, so we can review before contacting you for the actual files.

Thanks for the positive feedback, I have high hopes for the project and so far the response has been great.

#10 Upload?

Are we able to submit designs yet, I completed the upload form etc, but my design isn’t showing anywhere? Is this live yet?

#11 Really like your view. Some

Really like your view. Some real matter’s are discuss in here. Thanks for sharing with us. The information which you have provided in here in utterly important.
