Getting Paid
- Include your PayPal email address when you sign up, or add it if you have already signed up and did not include it in the registration process.
- When a theme is sold the buyer is allowed a 7 day money back period, after this has elapsed you will be paid via PayPal on the next normal business day, or within 3 days if there are mitigating circumstances such as our servers or PayPals website being down.
- Deductions: 20% of the sale price is deducted by AdaptiveThemes for costs. The balance is split between Designer and Themer.
Twenty percent may seem like a lot to some, however once we have paid taxes, hosting costs, support costs and other expenses 20% is actually very low margin. We have to protect the financial integrity of the project so we need a revenue stream to support this.
No one at AdaptiveThemes is paid a salary or wages. The caveat is that we do deduct for support costs and this is paid to support staff. If we do not offer support for our themes then no one will buy them.
We believe that by offering the 7 day money back policy we will actually sell more themes because this offers security to customers. For the small number of returns we think this is worth it.

Perhaps you should consider a unique license theme setting that communicates with adaptivethemes.com. Once the “7 days” has passed, we could have the php cache a final “owner” file. If they return the theme for money back, we then tell adaptivethemes.com to turn off anyone trying to use a theme with their license.
This could help you enforce the return policy. Otherwise, I’d just use my credit card to buy the files and then “return” them tomorrow.

It’s been irking me about how to enforce the return policy and that seem like a way to go. Josh, if you could architect and build such a feature/module email me with a quote or a route forward, basically I probably could build it but my time is so stretched right now.
Update! Josh, we have a new themer coming on board this week, he tells me he has done this already and is willing to share his solution with us. Fantastic.
